Welcome To

East Boston

There’s a nice blend of urban-suburban lifestyle here.

Welcome to East Boston

Harbor Home with History

Quite literally the light at the end of the (Callahan) tunnel, East Boston is experiencing a renaissance. The largely immigrant community has transitioned from mainly Italian in the early and mid-20th century to mostly Latino. Young professionals are flocking here for the proximity to downtown and the burgeoning selection of million-dollar condos and luxury apartments right on the water.

Those who reside here soak up the melting pot atmosphere, enjoying the global cuisine choices and the opportunity to celebrate various cultures with their neighbors. And, those skyline views of Boston Harbor aren’t too bad, either.

What to Love

  • Eclectic cuisine
  • Upscale real estate with water views
  • Diverse community
  • Green spaces

Local Lifestyle

The East Boston crowd either has deep ties to the neighborhood or recognizes the appeal of a community entrenched in culture and tradition, while offering quick access to the city. There are plenty of green spaces for gathering, like Piers Park or Belle Isle Marsh. There’s even a sandy stretch on Constitution Beach (aka Shay’s Beach). There’s a nice blend of urban-suburban lifestyle here, with families and young professionals living side by side amidst welcoming restaurants and cozy coffee shops.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Known as a landmark dining destination for tourists, Santarpio’s Pizza certainly isn’t overlooked by the locals. Bring cash and be ready to order an entire pizza (no slices). For a nice surprise, try the lamb skewers, which some say are even better than the amazing pizza. Tradition runs deep at Rino’s, in business for 24 years and originally opened by current Chef Anthony’s parents Rino and Anna DiCenso. Come for the red sauce and the thin-cut veal; stay for the huge ravioli which are homemade to order.

Located in an upscale East Boston apartment building right on the water, the ReelHouse offers an innovative angle on fresh New England fare. Sip handmade cocktails on the outdoor patio while gazing at the city skyline, then order the Grand Shellfish Tower — a mouthwatering plate of local oysters, shrimp cocktail, clam ceviche, snow crab claw, and lobster.

Join friends at The Tall Ship Boston, a 245-foot vessel-turned-floating-oyster-bar moored on Pier One. There are three custom-built mahogany bars built around the grand mast, allowing for the unobstructed city and harbor views. Dine on local oysters, shellfish, and generous charcuterie boards.

Things to Do

Like so many storied Boston neighborhoods, East Boston prides itself on the continued celebration and recognition of its heritage. Here, that means paying homage to the city’s Italian heritage, which the community does via its spectacular Columbus Day Parade. An eclectic mix of marching brass bands, military units and Colonial militias, Italian-American organizations, Duck Boat floats, bagpipes, and drum and bugle corps celebrate the commitment of the Massachusetts military units to American freedom.

Spend the day at beautifully landscaped Piers Park, with direct access to the waterfront. The 600-foot pedestrian promenade leads to two pavilions with fantastic skyline views, a collection of shade pavilions, an amphitheater, an outdoor fitness system, and a large playground. Want to dip your toes in the ocean? Head to nearby Constitution Beach, a hidden waterfront gem, where you can watch ships sailing through Boston Harbor as you swim.

Schools

East Boston is home to several excellent schools. Top educational opportunities include:

  • Manassah E. Bradley, K-5, well-rated public elementary school
  • James Otis, K-5, well-rated public elementary school
  • Excel Academy Charter School, 5-12, well-rated charter school
